A 4am playlist: hyperpop, breakcore, and one Deftones song

Hyperpop, defined properly

Pop music with every dial past the point of distortion. Pitched-up vocals, bass that's clipping on purpose, structures that fall apart halfway through. It's maximalist and it's meant to be slightly too much — the discomfort is the aesthetic, not a mistake.

It grew out of the PC Music circle in the mid 2010s, went properly mainstream around 2020, and then immediately fractured into a dozen micro-genres whose fans argue about boundaries constantly. Don't worry about the boundaries.

Breakcore is the fast one

Different lineage entirely — it comes out of jungle and drum and bass, built on chopped-up breakbeats at genuinely absurd tempos. The version that reached everyone through this corner of the internet is the softer strain: fast chaotic drums under something melancholy, often with an anime sample sitting on top.

That combination — very fast and very sad at the same time — is why it works at 4am specifically. It matches the state.

Where to actually start

For loud hyperpop: 100 gecs. Start at the beginning, be patient through the first thirty seconds, and let it break your brain slightly. It's supposed to.

For the sad end: Jane Remover. More song-shaped, more emotionally direct, and the easier entry point if the loud stuff bounces off you.

For breakcore: Sewerslvt is the canonical name in this scene. Put it on while doing something else rather than sitting down to listen — it works better as an environment than as an event.

And then let the algorithm take over, which is genuinely how this scene is meant to be navigated. There's no canon and no correct order.

The Deftones song

It's on every playlist I make and it doesn't fit any of them. I'm not going to explain it. If you know, you know, and if you don't, you'll figure out which one it is within about a week of listening to anything I put on.

Every playlist should have one track that's from somewhere else entirely. It stops the whole thing becoming a genre exercise.
